Watching the news can be very depressing, with the violence, fraud, corruption and political shenanigans. When we see horrible things happen, it's easy to place all of the blame on those who are doing the wrong. And undoubtably the blame does lie with those who do the wrong. But blame is not something that can be placed completely on one party or another. Other people who did nothing are responsible as well; not for committing the wrong, but for failing to prevent it. The man who stands by and watches as an old woman is robbed and beaten can say, "But I didn't do anything!" And that's exactly why he has a share in the blame. He did nothing.
Until we begin to take responsibility not only for not doing evil, but also for doing what is right, our country and society will never get back on the right track. When good men stand, evil men are restrained. When good men sit idly by, evil men prevail. If we fail to stand against evil, we have no one to blame but ourselves when evil triumphs. In the words of Plato, "The price of apathy is to be ruled by evil men."
"All that is necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing."
