When you trust someone, you can always depend on their word being good, and you don't have to wonder whether they're being truthful with you. You know you can depend on them to do what they say they will do. You don't trust anyone who makes a habit of lying, being deceitful, stealing, or anything that isn't 100% upfront and honest. So why should it be any different when it comes to the government?
It seems that a large portion of the American public is so naïve that they instinctively trust the government, just because it's the government. They're the ones who make the laws, so whatever they do must be right, right? But the Founding Fathers knew better. Which is precisely why they wrote the Constitution and Bill of Rights the way they did. They didn't trust the government to protect our rights, so they put checks and balances into place to retrain the government from overreaching its authority.
Unfortunately, liberals and progressives have found ways around those restrictions, albeit usually by just ignoring the Constitution altogether. But that drives home the point even more than ever: Government cannot be trusted. And guess what? Nowhere will you find the Founding Fathers encouraging the citizens to trust the government. In fact, it's the exact opposite. The Founding Fathers constantly reminded the American people that the government is not to be trusted, and that the citizens must remain vigilant to protect our liberties.
