Common Sense — The Pamphlet That Started a Revolution
In January 1776, a 47-page pamphlet changed the world. Thomas Paine’s Common Sense didn’t just argue for American independence — it made ordinary people believe it was possible. It sold half a million copies in a country of two and a half million people. In today’s terms, that’s 75 million copies. No book before or since has moved a nation to action quite like it.
Now, 250 years later, Applewood Books has released this America 250 Commemorative Edition — a beautifully produced hardcover that brings Paine’s words back to the moment they were written, just as America prepares to celebrate its Semiquincentennial.
If you believe the founding principles of this country still matter — that liberty isn’t inherited, it’s earned — this is the book to have on your shelf. Or better yet, to give to someone who needs to read it.
About Thomas Paine
Paine arrived in America from England in 1774, carrying a letter of introduction from Benjamin Franklin. He’d already written against the slave trade. By 1775, as tensions between Britain and the colonies reached a breaking point, he sat down and wrote the case for independence in plain language that any farmer, tradesman, or soldier could understand. Published January 10, 1776, Common Sense became the best-selling printed work in American history.
